Exchange Disaster recovery – Steps for Disaster recovery

Disaster recovery is a scenario in which you have to restore you Exchange server as will as
Windows 2003 server. Disaster recovery is a final point of restoration of Exchange server. In
disaster recovery the entire Exchange server with Windows 2003 server is rebuilt.

Summary to perform disaster recovery

• Reinstall Windows 2003 server
• Restore Windows 2003 system state
• Install Exchange server 2003 with /DisasterRecovery parameter
• Restore Exchange database from backup
• Replay logs files.

Steps for Disaster recovery

Step – III (Install Exchange Server 2003 with DiasterRecovery)
The third step is to install exchange server with /DisasterRecovery option with setup.exe. The
/DisasterRecovery option installs Exchange Server 2003 so that you can rebuild your Exchange
Server as it was before. Before using /Disaster recovery you must install all the requirement for
Exchange Server. /Forestprep and /Domainprep also must be used.
Step – VI (Restore Exchange Database)
The fourth and the most important step is to restore Exchange database or stores from backup
media using NTbackup program.
Step – V (Replay logs files)
The final step after restoring the Exchange databases is to replay the logs files. After replaying
the logs files your Exchange Server is now ready to use.
Step – I (Installation of Windows Server 2003)

The first steps for disaster recovery is to reinstall Windows Server 2003. The server must be
installed from the same CD or media and must be installed in same partition with same computer
name, IP address, Folder name, etc.

Step – II (Restoration of System State)

The next step is to restore system state of Windows Server 2003. You must restore Windows
Server 2003 latest system state from backup media using NTbackup program.

Step – III (Install Exchange Server 2003 with DiasterRecovery)

The third step is to install exchange server with /DisasterRecovery option with setup.exe. The
/DisasterRecovery option installs Exchange Server 2003 so that you can rebuild your Exchange
