Microsoft Exchange Server Important points about RSG
Articles, Exchange Server, Windows Add commentsImportant points about RSG
• An RSG can be used only to recover mailbox data. To recover public folder data, you
must use a recovery forest and recovery server.
• RSGs cannot be used to recover mailboxes that have been deleted.
• In order to use an RSG, you must have a backup of the mailbox store. If you do not have
a backup, you do not have data you can recover.
• You can create only one RSG per server. In an Active/Active Exchange cluster, only one
RSG per cluster can be created. In an Active/Passive Exchange cluster, one RSG per EVS
can be created.
• No more than five mailbox stores can be mounted in an RSG.
• Only mailbox stores from the same Administrative Group can be added to an RSG. And
once you add a mailbox store to an RSG, only mailbox stores from the same original
storage group can be added to the RSG.
• You can add an Exchange 2000 mailbox store to an RSG, but only if the original storage
group was on an Exchange 2000 server that had Service Pack 3 or later installed. When
you add an Exchange 2000 database to an RSG, the database will be upgraded to
Exchange 2003 format.
• Once a mailbox store has been mounted in an RSG, all mailboxes will remain
disconnected and cannot be reconnected.
• Mailbox stores from clustered Exchange servers can be added to an RSG on unclustered
Exchange servers and vice versa.
• The name of an RSG must be unique; you cannot create an RSG with the same name as
an existing storage group.
• Once an RSG has been created, it cannot be renamed, and the paths configured for your
transaction logs and system paths cannot be changed.
• RSGs cannot be backed up, and administrative functions such as online maintenance and
policies do not apply to RSGs.
• All protocols except for MAPI are disabled; you cannot access a mailbox store mounted
in an RSG using POP3, IMAP4, or HTTP.
