How to install the Websense ISAPI Filter

The Websense ISAPI Filter supports communication between Microsoft ISA Server and Websense Enterprise. Once Websense software is installed, you must install the ISAPI Filterat each Microsoft ISA Server machine that will communicate with Websense.

Follow these instructions to install the Websense ISAPI Filter.

  1. Go to the machine where you want to install the ISAPI Filter and log on with administrator access.
  2. If necessary, close any open applications.
  3. Access the Websense installer that is specific to your version of Websense.
    1. Make sure you have your Websense subscription key. You need it to log on.
    2. Go to www.mywebsense.com and download the installer.
  4. Run the download file. This unzips the Websense files and automatically starts the Websense installer.
  5. Install Websense Enterprise. For details, read Chapter 4, Installation, in the Websense Enterprise Installation Guide for use with Integrated Microsoft Products. Make sure you access the document that is appropriate for your version of Websense Enterprise. (See Websense Documentation link below.) 
    When prompted to make selections for:

    1. Websense components, select Websense Enterprise, and then click Next.
    2. integration options, select Integrated, and then click Next.
    3. integration products, select Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server, and then click Next.
    4. the Websense plug-in, select Install Plug-in only, and then click Next.
    5. the Websense Enterprise Policy Server, identify the IP address of the machine. The default port number is 15868.
    6. Continue responding to prompts to complete your Websense Enterprise installation.
    7. When the installation is done, click Finish.
    8. Reboot the machine.
  6. Use Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services to stop and then restart the Web Proxy Service.
  7. Select Start > Programs > Microsoft ISA Server > ISA Management to open the ISA Management Console.
  8. In the navigation pane, select Servers and arrays > ISA Server name > Monitoring > Services.
  9. Highlight the Web Proxy entry.
  10. Stop the service.
    • In the taskpad view, click Stop a Service.
    • In the advanced view, right-click, and then select Stop from the drop-down menu.
  11. Start the service
    1. In the taskpad view, click Start a Service.
    2. In the advanced view, right-click, and then select Start from the drop-down menu.
  12. Read Chapter 5, Initial Setup in the Websense Enterprise Installation Guide for use with Integrated Microsoft Products to configure Websense Enterprise.
  13. Read Chapter 6, Authentication in the Websense Enterprise Installation Guide for use with Integrated Microsoft Products to configure authentication via Microsoft ISA Server.

Repeat this procedure for every ISA Server machine that needs to communicate with Websense Enterprise.
