What is Piwik

Piwik is an open source web analytics system written in PHP.  Piwik is a downloadable, open source (GPL licensed) web analytics software package. It provides detailed reports on your website and its visitors, including the search engines and keywords they used, the language they speak, which pages they like, the files they download… and so much more.

Piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics.  Piwik is PHP MySQL software which you download and install on your own webserver. At the end of the 5-minute installation process you will be given a JavaScript tag. Simply copy and paste this tag on websites you wish to track. you can see a online demo.

How to Install Piwik

Before going to Install Piwik, check the requirements .

To run Piwik your host just needs a couple of things:

  • PHP version 5.1.3 or greater
  • MySQL version 4.1 or greater
  • (enabled by default) PHP extension pdo and pdo_mysql

After checking the requirements you upload the piwik Directory to your root folder of your webserver. Then access the Piwik by typing the url of the webserver. Like http://192.168.1.1/piwik. Then you will get the following window.

Click On Next to procede.

If everything is right on the server, piwik will show modules us green, so that you can proceed to next step.

In this screen you need to give your database settings like username, password and DB Name. Then click on Next to proceed.

Will give you a sucess message for DB Tables created. Click to proceed

im5In the above screen you need to give your General settings Like your super user name and password along with email. This is for login to your PIWIK server. Click next to procede.

In this screen we have to specify the website in which we are going to analyse the traffic. Give your website name along with url. Clock to proceede.

Once we have provided the website name and url, Piwik  generates the java script which we need to paste anywhere in the website, preferred is header or footer. click next to proceede
