How to Setup a VPN in Windows

There are sometimes we need to access the files and other network resources in the office while you are travelling or on a holiday for some important work. In such situations the VPN comes in to picture. VPN stands for virtual private network, Its nothing but you are accessing your private files over a unsecured network (Internet) with some kind of security.

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that is implemented in an additional logical layer (overlay) on top of an existing larger network. It has the purpose of creating a private scope of computer communications or providing a secure extension of a private network into an insecure network such as the Internet.

The links between nodes of a virtual private network are formed over logical connections or virtual circuits between hosts of the larger network. The Link Layer protocols of the virtual network are said to be tunneled through the underlying transport network.

In this vpn Howto we will explain How to setup a VPN connection to your corporate network or you small office network.

For setup a VPN you need the following things in place.

1) Windows Server (2000/2003 or any later version)

2) Internet connection with one Live Ip

Thats all, Just login to your windows server with administrative privileges .and go to start, Administration tools and clcik on routing and remote access as shown in the below picturer1Once you clicked the routing and access , you will get the following window. Just right click on your server name and click on enable routing and remote access.

Select virtual private network and NAT and click next to continue.

r5The above window is very important. If you are having two nic (lan cards) and internet is connected directly to this system then check the internet connection LAN and also tick mark on enable security settings.

clcik nect to continue.

r6In the above screen gives options for ip address management. when vpn users connetc the server gives one local network free ip to the user for connecting with local network. so you have to select DHCP if you are having a DHCP server in the network, Otherwise select from a specified range of address option.

r7Gives a new pool of free ip address on the above window. for adding free ip address juct click on New button.

r8select the default option here if you are not having a RADIUS server. click next to continue.

r9click on the Finish button. you will get a popup just like given below.

r10click ok to continue, you will get a progress bar like shown below.

r11Thats all we finished the VPN configuration.
