Assigning roaming profiles to users can greatly reduce your day to day workload. Windows provides the ability to redirect specific user folders to server locations, using a group policy extension called Folder Redirection. Many administrators may wish to use folder redirection in such a way that a user’s folders are automatically redirected to a newly created folder for each user.

Here i am going to redirect a folder for all my users in my company. I will explain folder redirection in step by step.

1) Create a folder in the windows server. I created a folder called “all” in the server E drive. Once you have created this just go to properties and set the security, IF YOU ARE GOING TO ALLOW THIS FOLDER O ENTIRE WORK FORCE THEN ADD EVERYONE.

Once you have set the permission, then go to sharing tab shown as below and share the folder.Allways share the folder with $ sign as shown below. It will help you to hide the folder in the network.

Once you have shared the folder just go to permission button and set the permission as shown below.

2) We have finished our first step, Now open your active directory and create a new OU (organisation Unit) as shown below.

If you are already having a OU then ignore the above step and go to OU properties as shown on new policy and give a name to it. I given the name  as folder redirection.Once you have done the above step you click on Edit tab , You will get a window like shown below for editing your group policy. In the Group policy expand user configuration and click windows settings.

There you can see folder redirection. There are four redirections available with windows as mentioned below:

a) Application Data

b) Desktop

c) Mydocuments

d) Start menu.

As the name suggests the folder can redirect to desktop, mydocuments, application data or you can put it in the start menu.

Here i am going to do Desktop , So just click on Desktop and go to properties, you will get a same window like below.

On Settings, you select Basic redirection, In target folder location select, redirect to the following location and in Root path you give your shared folder name. Here you can give your ip with shared folder name or server name with shared folder name.

You have almost finished , Now just click ok to close all the open windows and go to your OU and create a new user. Then you just login with the new user in a desktop. you can see your shared folder in the desktop.
